Smart Metering

Smart Metering for domestic customers will revolutionise the UK energy market, utilising 21st century technology to change how consumers use, manage and reduce energy consumption. Consumers will also be able to interact with Energy Suppliers in new and exciting ways, changing how they interact and communicate. There is a requirement from the UK Government for energy companies to install 53 million gas and electricity meters at 30 million domestic and smaller non-domestic properties across the country by 2024.

WHAT IS A SMART METER?

A Smart meter is a next generation of gas and electricity meter that is able to provide a range of intelligent functions.  An in-home Display (IHD) is also required, this links to the electric and gas meters enabling the consumer to see their energy usage and costs in real time.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF HAVING A SMART METER?

A Smart meter is able to directly communicate with the energy company registered to the meter in order that the energy company can bill the consumer more accurately. With more accurate bills and streamlined costs to energy companies, we will all pay less for our energy.

Not only will our bills reduce as a result of efficiencies for energy companies, smart meters will also enable consumers to see how much they have used and when they have used it. Using this information to understand energy use and changing habits will help consumers to use less and more efficiently.

WHEN WILL SMART METERS BE AVAILABLE?

Smart meters will be being rolled out across the UK by the end of 2024. Each energy supplier is responsible for installing smart meters at their customer’s premises and has developed plans to meet this deadline.
